"It was nerve-racking, but it was awesome," said Bauman, a junior. "I work on taking penalties in practice, so I was ready for it. I kind of know what keepers do."
Marcus (14-4-4), No. 22 in TopDrawerSoccer.com's winter national rankings, needed a goal in the final 10 minutes to get to extra time and had to dodge a miss by Carroll's fifth shooter to stay alive for Bauman's extra shootout round.
"Peyton is able to handle shootouts so well,'' said Marcus coach Chad Hobbs. "We started practicing penalties three weeks ago because we knew as tough as Region I is, it could come down to that.''
Bauman moved to her right and smothered the final Carroll attempt, sending her teammates on a congratulatory race from the sideline. Carroll (23-2), ranked No. 2 nationally, was outscored in the shootout 4-3.
Marcus will play District 6-6A rival Plano in a regional quarterfinal. Plano beat Mansfield 4-2 as all four playoff teams from 6-6A reached the third round.
Marcus led 1-0 at halftime, thanks to a well-placed header by sophomore Olivia Kovach in the game's fourth minute. Kovach was on the receiving end of Maddie Algya's bending corner kick.
The work of defenders Kirsten Penney and Kovach frustrated Carroll's leading scorer, junior Ally Griffin, in the first half. Coming into the match, the Texas A&M pledge had scored in 12 consecutive games among her school-record single season goal total of 48.
Griffin, who missed off the right post two minutes into the second half, tied it 1-1 eight minutes later with a 26-yard left-footed laser inside the left post. Freshman Kendall Gilpin gave Carroll a 2-1 lead at the midpoint of the second half when an opportunistic rebound came her way 18 yards from goal.
Marcus forced overtime when Kovach scored for the second time off a corner, this time nodding in a free ball from just a couple of yards from goal after Riley Mattingly's corner kick was headed down by Jordan Moon.
A shootout was required after 20 minutes of scoreless extra time.
