Last week in this space, we mentioned that it was pretty much a certainty that the Carroll girls soccer program was going to finish somewhere in the 120s in terms of the number of goals this prolific offense was going to score.

Well, the Lady Dragons (22-1, 12-0 District 7-6A) didn’t. They soared into the 130s and gave themselves a chance to challenge the single-season school record for goals (140 in 2002).

Thanks to a pair of 11-0 wins over Haltom on March 8 and Hurst L.D. Bell this past Friday, Carroll’ season total stood at 131. That total is already the second-highest total in school history. The 22 goals allowed them to climb from fifth-highest total to the current mark.

But consider the kind of talent that has come through head coach Matt Colvin’s program. The rise of Carroll’s offense has been seen pretty much in this decade.

Although the 2002 team holds the top mark, four of the top seasons occurred within the last five years:

▪  The 2012 team scored 110 goals.

▪  The 2014 team scored 114 goals.

▪  The 2013 Class 5A state finalist team scored 98 goals.

▪  The 2005 team scored 118 goals.

What Colvin has always pointed to is the amount of unselfishness with which the program has played every season.

Against Haltom, the scoring was distributed between Ally Griffin collecting another hat trick (three goals). Grace Cory, Alli Gardner and Georgie Phelps each scored two goals. And Carroll was pretty efficient in that match. The Lady Dragons needed only 26 shots.

Facing L.D. Bell on senior night, Griffin collected another hat trick. Allie Luna scored twice. The other six goals were spread out to others.

With the regular season concluded, Colvin said he was probably going to shut down the week and give his players time off so they could enjoy spring break.

Carroll was still searching for a warmup game to play around March 21. However, it wasn’t clear Colvin had found an opponent. It’s likely that if this team was going to find a game, it was going to have to find it outside of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Bi-district opponent setup

The Class 6A Region I bi-district playoffs begin in on March 24. As for its opponent from 8-6A, it appears that Carroll was looking at playing Cedar Hill or South Grand Prairie. The teams played each other on Tuesday for the fourth place position.

South Grand Prairie is three points ahead of Cedar Hill. Based on that district’s tiebreakers, Cedar Hill had to win that match by two goals in order to claim the playoff berth. Anything less and the Lady Warriors would be playing Carroll.

Can she reach 50?

Griffin’s two hat tricks last week put her at 46 goals scored for the season. She needs four to reach the unthinkable plateau of 50. She has scored 35 percent of this team’s goals and has tallied at least six hat tricks this season. Given how Carroll will have the advantage in the bi-district round, Griffin should be able to near it.
